BeFC battery alternative wins Cleantech Open contest

BeFC can add another award to its trophy cabinet, this time through the Cleantech competition organised by the Cleantech Open France association. BeFC was selected among more than 180 companies, and passed with flying colors a double-examination evaluating the robustness of its technology  leading to a win in the category “Digital and IoT”.

Cleantech Open France

Cleantech Open France is an organization with a clear and important mission; namely to identify the start-ups that will make their mark on the energy transition, and subsequently help accelerate their technological and commercial evolution.

Cleantech Open France is an important stakeholder in the French ecological ecosystem and can boast impressive statistics demonstrating its impact on French clean tech growth. Indeed, over 635 start-ups have been selected as worthy participants in its incubation programs and the organization has helped to contribute to over 1b € in investment with the creation of over 10,000 jobs.

This specialized incubator seeks, identifies, finances and supports the leading French ecoclean tech startups . Cleantech Open’s activities are closely aligned with the French government’s objective of making France a leader the energy transition, with close to 15 billion euros allocated by the state for this purpose.

BeFC’s disruptive new energy source wins Cleantech Award

After two months of review, BeFC’s revolutionary, paper-based biofuel cell was chosen from among over 180 entries, and was one of only five finalists in its category.

The competition categorized companies into nine key sectors for the development of green technologies: Renewable energies, Energy efficiency, Water, air and biodiversity protection, Mobility, Digital and IoT, Green chemistry and new materials, Construction & real estate, Agriculture and food and finally the Circular economy.

BeFC won the Internet of Things section for its enzymatic micro biofuel cell. BeFC’s ecological miniature fuel cell (a clean alternative to low-voltage batteries) is part of a system which includes an active sensor module to harvest data on variables as wide-ranging as temperature, light, pH, humidity and shock. The fuel cell is a sustainable energy source and provides the power for an active sensing module which can help optimize products in market sectors as diverse as Internet of Things (IoT), Wearables, Medical, Healthcare and Logistics among others.

BeFC’s prize: a valued incubation programme

Alexandre Bloch, BeFC’s Sustainability lead, pitched the biofuel cell project to Cleantech Open. He explained how BeFC’s advanced technology exploits a multidisciplinary scientific approach to make electricity from organic materials (glucose, enzymes and oxygen). He explained BeFC’s vision for the future and how the organization has helped advance micro-battery research through a technology that uses papers and enzymes to create energy; one that is not only recyclable - but also biodegradable.

By entering the competition and winning this category, BeFC has gained entry to a support program for several months, in addition to secondary benefits like increased media exposure. BeFC will also be able to exploit  Cleantech Open's extensive network of public stakeholders, investors and corporates keen to boost innovation in the cleantech arena.

Cleantech Open France is known for its huge impact on the startup ecosystem by supporting its laureates in creating sustainable economic growth with real benefits for society. One of the program’s success stories remains “Blablacar”, which won the contest in 2010. The story of its impact is exceptional: it has succeeded in reducing 1.6 million tons of CO2 in one year, which is more than the total amount of CO2 emissions from road traffic in Paris and its suburbs!
