BeFC is pleased to announce that its core technology, an enzymatic biofuel cell, (a sustainable alternative to miniature primary batteries) has been placed on the radar of StartUS Insights, a technology scout for high-value emerging technology. StartUS Insights has listed BeFC in its renowned Top 10 Renewable Energy Trends & Innovation guide 2022.

StartUS Insights is a technology scout specializing in innovation. The company audits emerging technology from all over the world, looking for the solutions needed by industry, in spheres ranging from research and development (R&D) and new product development (NPD) amongst others. StartUS is a well-known technology expert and counts Samsung, Nestlé and Mania among its impressive roster of clients.

StartUS scouts thousands of startups to identify the best inventions; disruptive technologies with high potential and communicates the industrial benefits of these organizations to its clients. It was therefore a source of great pride for BeFC to be selected in the annual Top 10 Renewable Energy Trends & Innovation report.

BeFC makes top ten of prestigious StartUS technology ranking


BeFC offers a sustainable energy and active sensor solution that allows industry to not only meet its business needs, but its sustainability targets. Our cutting-edge technology is based on decades of research, and BeFC is now able to offer customers an extremely thin and flexible miniature paper-based fuel cell (a sustainable alternative to many primary batteries) which creates electricity from oxygen, sugar and enzymes! This new sustainable energy source eliminates the need to use conventional button (sometimes called coin cell) batteries that release toxic waste including metals such as cadmium, mercury and lithium into the environment. Billions of these batteries end up in landfill every year, polluting our environment.

A low-cost, metal-free, sustainable energy source

BeFC can help industry fight climate change through its biofuel cell technology, which can be broken down naturally in industrial compost at end of life. However, the added bonus is that this technology can help industry meet its sustainability targets and reduce expenditure on expensive (and toxic) primary cells.

The biofuel cell technology (which provides power, just like a normal low-voltage battery) can also help reduce expenditure - especially liabilities related to waste collection and treatment. Furthermore, such organizations are able to offer their end-user customers an environmentally-friendly product that will not leech toxic hard metals into landfill and the water table.

The StartUS report selected approximately 5152 energy startups, based on an even larger number of companies surveyed, and placed BeFC in the Top 10!

BeFC has already put in place joint agreement contracts with a number of prestigious clients. These customers have stated that they are drawn to the customizability of our miniature paper-fuel cell as well as its size, and ability to help them meet sustainability targets.

BeFC plans to market its own products in the future, however, because its core technology is so flexible; so adaptable to existing products, it intends to concentrate initial development on joint development programs.
