BeFC wins first prize for sustainable biofuel cell and active sensor technology

We are proud to announce that BeFC has won a prestigious award at the HLF Annual Summit’s Start-Up Show. BeFC was invited to the symposium with CEO, Dr. Jules Hammond representing BeFC at the event. Dr. Hammond pitched our advanced green, eco-designed energy solution to the judges at the Startup Show and won first prize in the Innovation Ecosystems category! The award is testament to the value that the organisers saw in BeFC’s core technology – an environmentally-friendly biofuel cell which provides energy, just like a battery, but can be disposed of in industrial compost, thereby reducing the negative environmental impact of metals such as cadmium, lithium and mercury which, when not properly recycled, end up in landfill.

An invitation like no other... BeFC at the HLF Annual Summit!

First and foremost, we were thrilled to receive the HLF invitation, along with the good news that BeFC was one of the final 10 finalists lucky enough to attend this prestigious event. The invitation alone was a golden opportunity to meet the High Level Nexus and its different delegations, a top-of-the-class network of innovation ecosystems. The HLF nexus meets to discuss innovation management policies and strategies, and their role in socio-economic and environmental challenges. The HLF delegations bring together international executives, key players, policy, and decision-makers from a mixture of sources: public authorities, higher education, research, industry and business. This year, the theme was linked to the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the summit reflected on how local & regional innovation ecosystems can meet these objectives.

A showcase for BeFC’s eco-friendly, biofuel cell – an important new energy source

The event gave Dr. Jules Hammond and BeFC the opportunity to showcase the BeFC biofuel cell/active sensor technology to a network of high-level contacts. Events such as this are hugely influential and can help accelerate BeFC’s integration into the global innovation community.

Our eco-friendly miniature paper-based biofuel cell, which generates electricity from glucose, enzymes and oxygen was evaluated by the HLF Steering Committee. The judges were highly impressed with its ability to limit the negative environmental impact of businesses through an environmentally-friendly, safe solution that not only provides electricity from organic materials, but meets industry’s needs. The BeFC biofuel cell can help industry say goodbye to conventional solutions where toxic waste such as lithium and cadmium can do untold damage to the planet. Companies now have an alternative  that is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. BeFC has received positive feedback from a number of clients who have stated that they are now able to make substantial savings by avoiding costs associated with the regulatory collection and treatment of pollutant waste.

BeFC is receiving support from specialized, indpependent, partners to help monitor, test and validate the recyclability of its biofuel cell, and the company has also effectively demonstrated that the digital platform (active sensor module) does not interfere with product recycling. Dr. Jules Hammond spoke at the event about some of the possible applications of our eco-designed solution: we are currently working on joint development agreements (JDA) with a variety of clients, as it is easy to integrate this battery-like power source into diverse applications, resulting in an environmentally friendly product. Dr. Hammond explained how we offer solutions for a wide range of industries, from the medical sector, to digitalized agriculture and asset management/smart logistics as well as 4.0 industries exploiting IoTs.

A customisable approach: Metal-free biofuel cells and active-sensor combinations.

These industries also benefit from an active sensor solution bolted onto our paper biofuel cells. The biofuel cells which generate electricity from natural resources, are supported by a digital platform in the form of sensors able to detect critical information such as: pH, temperature, blood pressure or other essential parameters. This information can help the logistics industry, for example, to improve its transparency, identify bottlenecks, facilitate tracking and tracing and help increase efficiency and decrease bottom-line costs (while meeting their sustainability objectives!).

Similarly, in the medical industry BeFC biofuel cells can replace some traditional batteries used in medical devices and healthcare technologies, thus helping reduce their carbon imprint, reduce waste and contribute to the fight against climate change – all whilst effectively monitoring patients’ health. We receive regular requests from the luxury sector asking BeFC to help improve packaging, track products and improve brand image by positioning them as leaders in sustainability. This HLF event, centred around innovation and invited startups to develop new solutions, and use technology to fight climate change.

Hi-tech sustainability: First prize for a disruptive biofuel cell/active sensor technology.

At the end of the panel’s deliberations, we received excellent news: BeFC was awarded first prize for its BioFuel cell – a disruptive technology with the potential to help industry meets its business and sustainability objectives.
